At this time, 5 commercial carriers serviced Naples: American Eagle, Cape Air, Com Air, Gulfstream International and USAir Express. The Mosquito Control District was in the process of moving into a new facility, finally locating staff and aircraft. Plans were being made to build a new control tower, more shade hangars, and more businesses relocated to the airport. Naples population had grown to 143,700 by 1989. Built in 1988, the Southwest Regional Airport in Ft. Myers ultimately reduced airline statistics in Naples.
