The Naples Mosquito Control District (NMCD) was formed in November 1950. By January 1965, the first of several twin engine Beechcraft D-185 (Twin Beeches) was purchased and outfitted with insecticide tanks and nozzles. Later in the 1960s, NMCD leased helicopters. In the 1970s, they changed their name to Collier Mosquito Control District to reflect the expansion of services.

Aerial view of Naples Airport looking northwest over GA (General Aviation) ramp.  At this time, 5 commercial carriers serviced Naples: American Eagle, Cape Air, Com Air, Gulfstream International and USAir Express.  The Mosquito Control District was in the process of moving into a new facility, finally locating staff and aircraft.  Plans were being made to build a new control tower, more shade hangars, and more businesses relocated to the airport.  Naples population had grown to 143,700 by 1989.  Built in 1988, the Southwest Regional Airport in Ft. Myers ultimately reduced airline statistics in Naples.  Source: Pilots, Pinballs and Politics: A History of the Naples Municipal Airport by Nancy Fessenden, Copyright 2003, p.119.

05.17.2

Former weather tower used as a control tower at Naples Airport from 1983-93.  The old weather station from Kansas had finally arrived at Naples Airport in late 1983.  Perched on top of the newly constructed concrete pad, located in the north quadrant of the airport, east of runway 13/31. the box-shaped, white object would become the first air traffic control tower since the Army's control tower was torn down after the war (World War II).  During the pre-dawn hours, fog would often condense on the outsides of the tower's wrap around windows...not a good thing when attempting to spot planes.
